Stewart Thompson was named Teacher of the Year for the 2005-2006 school year at Benton High School. Mr. Thompson was selected for many reasons, one of the most significant being his complete overhaul of the bentonhighschool.com web site, taking it from a static site to an interactive site in just one year. Mr. Thompson (known at Benton as the “Webmaster” by his colleagues), first stabilized the original site, and then added more information and more functionality.
The site now provides a classWEB for each Benton teacher. This allows each teacher to post announcements, class work, homework, and most importantly grades (which are password protected) for each student. Scott Smith, principal of Benton, stated that “I have had more positive responses from parents of Benton students to the Class Webs on the Benton web site, than I have from any other single innovation we have added here.” In addition, the site has information on sports, extra-curricular activities, an events calendar, school policies and procedures, and much, much more.
Mr. Thompson teaches Math, in all its forms: AP Calculus (for advanced math students who take the class and the AP exam to earn not only credit at Benton, but also credit in certain colleges); Probability and Statistics; Algebra I, parts I and II; and Algebra 2. Mr. Thompson’s students think he is “cool” and “tough, but fair.”
Mr. Thompson is a product of the Bossier Parish School system himself, having graduated from Airline High School. He has a degree from Northwestern State University in Secondary Mathematics Education and is currently attending LSUS, finishing up his Master’s Degree in Administration. He comes from a family of educators: his father, Tim Thompson, is Principal of Stockwell Place Elementary; his step-mother, Kay Thompson, is a teacher at Cope Middle School; his step-sister, Kelle Head, is a Spanish teacher at Benton High. Stewart’s mom, Lynette Thompson, is in business at Custom Food Group.
Stewart Thompson is creating a legacy at Benton High School: for his teaching and for the great work he continues to complete on one of the school’s best communication tools—www.bentonhighschool.com! |
