Bossier Elementary Principal Cathleen Johnson's voice filled the school's gymnasium Tuesday morning.
"The highs today could reach 103 with a heat index of 105 to 108."
Thirty first-graders, busy jumping across the gym floor on one foot, are unaware of the warning.
Air from the ceiling vents cooling their faces also goes unnoticed as they giggle and listen for the "go" on the next drill -- side stepping.
Across the city at Parkway High School, kitchen staff cooked up a hot meal for 1,052 students. Yvonne Smith -- Mama to the students -- stands over the hot line without one bead of visible perspiration.
