Page 3 of 3 Benton High’s 54 Advanced Placement students continue to prepare for the AP exams the first week of May. Benton’s number of AP students has significantly increased from last year’s total of 28 students. The expansion of Benton’s AP Program to include English III had much to do with the increased number of students enrolled. In addition to English III, BHS is currently offering AP English IV and AP Calculus AB. Advanced Placement courses give students the rigor of a college course while still in the high school setting. The only requirements are a strong curiosity about the subject they plan to study and the willingness to work hard. Students in an AP course get a head start on college-level work, improve their writing skills, sharpen their problem-solving techniques, develop the study habits necessary for tackling rigorous course work, study subjects in greater depth and detail, and assume the responsibility of reasoning, analyzing, and understanding for themselves. Thirty-five BHS juniors will take the English Language and Composition exam on Monday, May 1; 16 students will take the Calculus AB exam on Tuesday, May 2; and 16 will take the English Literature and Composition exam on Thursday, May 4. This year, Benton has ten seniors who will take both the Calculus and English Literature exams. Normally the exams are paid for by individual students, but the Bossier Parish School System graciously picks up the tab for our students. Depending on their exam scores, some students may receive college credit for their performance in their respective course. The AP courses are taught at Benton High by Stewart Thompson, Peri Sandifer, and Earlene Winham.
