Page 5 of 7 SUMMARY OF LIMITATIONS AND SUPPORTING EVIDENCE Students do not exhibit the ability to reflect and evaluate their learning for the purpose of improvement of standardized test scores in the content area of mathematics. Data: - The percentage of students scoring “unsatisfactory” on the mathematics portion of the GEE 21 declined from 2001 – 2003; however, in 2004 this trend ended, and the percentage of students scoring at the lowest level reached a four year high. Also, during this time the percentage of students performing at the unsatisfactory level stayed at or below the district and state averages.
- IOWA test scores on the mathematics portion decreased by 7 points (National Percentiles Rank) from 2001 – 2004. During this period, with the exception of 2004, these test scores remained above the district, state, and national average.
- ACT mathematics scores have increased by .8 points from 2001 – 2004; however, these scores still remain slightly below the district, state, and national average.
Rationale: - The Louisiana School Accountability System’s growth target for Benton High School increased two points in the School Performance Score for the 2003 – 2004 school year. The GEE 21 and IOWA test scores account for ninety percent of this rating.
- As previously stated, “It is a goal of Benton High School to develop and implement programs which will enhance students’ problem-solving skills, especially in the area of mathematics.”
- Improved test scores (GEE 21, IOWA, & ACT) in mathematics demonstrate that teaching techniques that incorporate the use of mathematics across the curriculum have had positive effects on thinking and problem-solving skills.
