Page 2 of 3 Communication is an important part of community building as listed in Principle #10 (Organizational Effectiveness), page 32 of the Louisiana School Improvement Process Handbook, Fourth Edition 2003. According to Principle #10, “The school community is expanded and strengthened through collaborative networks of support for student learning.” It is the goal of Benton High School to enhance communications specifically between the school and the parents of our students. Data:
- Student Opinion Surveys revealed that teachers do not recognize parents; that parents are not involved in school-supported activities; and that parents do not help students with their schoolwork.
- Parent Opinion Surveys revealed that teachers do not recognize parents; that parents are not involved in school-supported activities; and that parents are not involved in the development of school policies.
- Teacher Opinion Surveys revealed that teachers do not recognize their students’ parents, and that the parents of their students do not help the students with their schoolwork.
- The NSSE School Beliefs Inventory Survey documented that faculty members ranked the statement “Teachers, administrators, parents, and the community share the responsibility for advancing the school’s mission” as one of their highest held beliefs.
Priority: Benton High School must communicate clearly, consistently, strategically and continuously with the parents of students to increase the parents’ awareness of the school’s goals and objectives; to encourage their participation in school-supported activities; and to engage them in assisting their child with his or her schoolwork. Rationale:
- Parents, students, administration and faculty believe that parental involvement is a missing element in the total education program at Benton High School (survey results).
Means of Evaluating Achievement of Goal:
- Annually complete the Louisiana Department of Education School Analysis Model (SAM) survey to determine if student, parent and faculty opinions improve with regard to parental involvement in the school.
- Monitor attendance at parent-teacher organization meetings, freshman orientation, and fall and spring back-to-school night events.
- Monitor the number of “hits” on the Benton High School web site.
