Page 10 of 14 Benton High School is a rural school which houses grades 9-12 and includes Option 2--8th grade transition students. The enrollment at the present time is 620 students. Benton High School has been fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1965. Transportation is available at no cost for all students via parish allocated school buses. Approximately 40 percent of the student body utilizes parish transportation with the remainder driving personal vehicles or relying on parents, relatives or friends for transportation. The campus consists of a single story main building with an attached gymnasium, a set of temporary buildings, a new gymnasium (shared with Benton Middle School), a football stadium and track, a baseball field, a softball field, and a new weight and conditioning center. There are two outdoor gathering areas for students, a picnic area and courtyard, along with parking spaces for students and teachers. Covered walkways connect the temporary buildings and shared gym with the main building. Key features of the campus include the following: computer workstations with high speed internet in all classrooms; two commerce labs with 53 PC workstations, projection equipment, and office/publishing software; a multi-purpose library facility with over 9,000 titles and equipment for large or small group presentations; a math lab with 24 PC workstations with Plato courseware and internet access; a band room; and a home economics lab. All areas of the school are handicap accessible with wheelchair ramps at all entrances. All of our bathroom facilities are also handicap accessible. Bossier Parish residents recently approved a property tax millage which will add a $3.2M, sixteen classroom wing to the BHS campus. In addition, the high school gym will be air-conditioned, and an outdoor covered eating area will be added. Benton has tried to promote a positive learning environment by implementing the 4x4 block schedule and by staying abreast of the latest advances in technology. The 4x4 block allows students to most effectively master the state content standards and to easily earn newly-adopted diploma requirements. At Benton High, we maintain a safe campus with the help of a School Resource Officer who assists administrators with security. In addition, we also try to encourage the support of our community through the cooperative interaction of all stakeholders.
