Benton High sophomore Kaitlin Flattmann is the Class 4A state champion in cross country for the second year in a row.

And this time, she led her team to a strong second-place finish in team scoring.

How strong? Favored St. Michael of Baton Rouge, the defending champion, scored 72 points and Benton scored 73.

That is as close as it gets.

It was the fourth state championship for Flattmann, whose winning time of 19:00.9 was 12 seconds faster than second-place Karensa Ellis of Alexandria Senior High.

Last year, she lowered the Class 4A cross country record to 17:59 and won both the 1,600 (5:07.93) and 3,200 (10:57.18) in the Class 4A state track and field meet.

But she wasn’t the only state champion from Bossier Parish Tuesday.

Matt Wolfe of Parkwas won the Class 4A boys’ title with a 15:36 performance, 12 seconds ahead of second-place Mitchell Landry of Haughton, a freshman.

Last year, Landry broke the state record for eighth graders in the 1,600-meter run with a 4:36 performance.

Shane Hershberger of Benton was fifth and teammate Taylor Ashton was eighth as Benton’s boys took fourth place  and Parkway was fifth in team scoring.
