The Benton boys and girls swept season-opening basketball games Monday night. At Benton, freshman Lulu Perry scored 17 points to lead Coach Mary Ward’s Lady Tigers to a 74-35 victory over Cotton Valley. In the boys’ game at Benton, 5-10 junior Michael Durham scored 31 points, including six three-pointers, as Benton took a 38-34 halftime lead and held on for an 87-75 victory over Cotton Valley. Chris Davis scored 18 points for Benton, while Steven Vinson had 16 points and Deterryion Robinson added 10. Ben Bull missed double figures by only one basket with eight points. The Benton girls took a 30-12 lead into the halftime break. Becca Parnell scored 10 points for the Benton girls, while Rebecca Thompson and Lauren Johnson had eight points apiece. Johnson also had nine steals and seven rebounds.
