The Benton Tigers took advantage of a blustery wind and four second-half Crimson Tide turnovers to breeze past visiting Minden, 35-6, in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday night.] Benton, improving to 10-0, will advance to face the winner of the Archbishop Shaw and Pearl River contest next Friday. Minden ends the season at 4-7. In the early going, Benton had the wind at its back and had little trouble moving the ball, rushing 17 times for 104 yards and a 6.1 yard average en route to a 14-0 lead and 6.11 yards per carry at the end of the first quarter. "We did what we had to do," said Benton head coach Mitch Downey. "The game was tight early on and Minden played extremely hard. I thought our defense played an excellent game and our offense played well enough to win. " "The wind was a factor. It changes what you can do on offense and it played a big role in the kicking game. I thought Jeff Thomassee had a whale of a game, keeping the ball in the end zone on his kickoffs. He's been effective all year, but tonight he really stepped up." |
