Benton’s Tigers are 9-0 for the third time in Mitch Downey’s 16 years as head coach. The Tigers have won nine or more games in five of the last six seasons, and nine of the last 12. When a high school football team wins nine games, its first state playoff game is usually at home. Benton’s only road games in playoff openers since 2001 were a 28-6 loss to West Feliciana in 2006, when the Tigers lost three of their first four games but rallied to win the next six, and a double overtime win over Marksville in 2005, when the Tigers won seven in a row before falling to Redemptorist in the semifinals.
