Despite the proliferation of the spread offense among teams in the area, the Benton Tigers proved that old-fashioned smash-mouth football can still be effective. Benton ran roughshod over the Woodlawn Knights, relying on a stingy defense, aggressive special teams and plenty of rushing attempts to win the contest 33-14. The homecoming win keeps Benton (4-0, 2-0) atop District 1-4A as the only undefeated team. The Tigers' trio of running backs hammered away at the Knights for 217 yards between them. Benton's power back, Casey Henderson, ran at Woodlawn defenders and made them feel his strength in tough, short-yardage runs. "We have three good running backs," Henderson said. He put up 95 of Benton's 293 total rushing yards. The senior, who says he can bench press more than 475 pounds, said the win in his final homecoming game felt good but noted the team as a whole did not execute perfectly. |
