Benton's Emmitte Stephens took care of the highlights early. The rest of the game was vintage Tigers. Stephens returned the game's opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown and Benton turned to its ball-control offense to snuff out Haughton's fourth-quarter comeback and seal a 34-14 victory in the District 1-4A opener for both on Friday night. "We're going to wear on people," Benton coach Mitch Downey said. "We're going to hit them in the mouth 100 to 120 times and see who's the last man standing." That was Benton (3-0. 1-0) on Friday night. The Tigers dominated time of possession in the second half and, coupled with a few Haughton miscues, helped Benton gain revenge from Haughton's overtime win in Benton a season ago. "I had to get revenge," said Stephens, who added a 48-yard second-quarter return to set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from Mark Harringotn to Cameron McKoy that broke a 7-all tie and gave the Tigers the lead for good. |
