Benton defense dominates; view stats & pictures Print E-mail

Many people remember the offensive stars of Benton’s run to the Class 4A semifinals last year.

Many of those stars now are gone. What remains, however, is a stingy defense, capable of picking up its offensive counterpart.

Benton picked off three passes, including a leaping, game-clinching interception by Josh Player with 1:02 to play, as the Tigers held off Winnfield for a season-opening 13-0 victory on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

“He threw it and I wasn’t supposed to get the pick,” said Player, who leaped and stretched for the interception he returned 60 yards to the Winnfield 5. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I was actually waiting for the back to come out in the flat. I was in the right place at the right time.”

The defensive pass catching was seemingly all that went right for a Tigers team that lost its first game to Hurricane Gustav. The effects of the storm kept Alexandria Senior High and Benton from matching up.
