Mathematics teachers Marvin Nelson, Jason Edwards and Wanda Farrington have received 2 Bossier Parish Optimist Club Grants. A total of 10 grants were awarded to Bossier Parish Schools. Mr. Nelson was awarded $950.10 to support “Project Autonomous Navigation”. Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Farrington were awarded $2,398.00 to integrate the TI-Navigator and SMART interactive board into their math classrooms.
These teachers, along with their principals and Mr. Kruithof, will be honored at the Optimist Club Lunch on Wednesday, May 28, at 12:00 noon, at the Stone's Throw Cafe.
Project Autonomous Navigation will use “Board of Education” Robots (BOE Bots) to engage students in computer programming and navigation problems. These activities will reinforce concepts in algebra and geometry using coordinate planes, distance measurement, rotation calculations (wheel circumference), angular calculations (trigonometry), and logic (programming).
This project seeks to integrate the TI-Navigator and SMART Board interactive whiteboard into the Algebra I and Geometry curriculum. Both systems provide a direct communication between students’ graphing calculators and the teacher’s personal computer. The cooperating teachers will use instructional strategies that implement the systems, promoting higher-level thinking skills. |
