If Tuesday’s playoff game showed anything to Benton softball coach Michelle Owens, it’s that her pitching staff is more than ready to lead the Lady Tigers through the postseason.
Behind the pitching pair of Bailey Woodward and Jeri Wilson, No. 6 seed Benton routed McDonogh #35, 15-0, to advance to the Class 4A regionals. Woodward, Wilson and the rest of the Lady Tigers needed only 4 1/2 innings to dispatch the visiting club from New Orleans.
Woodward and Wilson each struck out seven and combined for a one-hitter, breezing through the Roneagles’ lineup.
Terrmika Wilson’s single in the fourth inning was the only thing to come between the pair’s chances at a no-hitter. She was the only Roneagle to advance past first base.
“They both did a wonderful job,” Owens said. “We’re going to have to be strong at the plate, and the pitching will have to hold up. I’m really pleased with both pitchers.”
Woodward also had the biggest hit, a triple in the second inning that scored two runs and sparked the offense to its 15-run output.
