On a sunny, spring afternoon you can find members of the Benton High School Track team working out.
Nothing unusual there.
High school track teams throughout the state practice during the spring.
No, what's unusual is how many track athletes are working out.
There are boys, girls, sprinters, distance runners, field athletes, varsity athletes and junior varsity. In total, you'll find 92 athletes out for track at Benton.
"I've been at Benton High School for 10 years now and it's always been the philosophy when I got here," Benton coach Frank Trammel said. "We just felt like track wasn't just a sport of quality but of quantity as well.
"We just built on that concept. We have a lot of participation in all of our sports with football, baseball and softball and cross country. We've been able as a staff to promote a lot of participation."
A large number of athletes requires plenty of attention from the Benton coaches.
Each day's workout is broken down by groups.
"Years ago, we decided the girls would do the same thing and we'd group them — field events, throwing events, spring relays and hurdles and vault in one group and then we'd take the distance runners and quarter-milers and jumpers in one group," Trammel said. "We were divided by three or four coaches. We'd all have a large group ourselves." Read more at ShreveportTimes.com... |
