High school softball coaches from around the state will meet in Alexandria next week to seed teams for the playoffs. It will mark the first time the LHSAA has seeded its softball playoffs. But softball coaches are optimistic after seeing the process work in boys and girls basketball.

"It worked well with basketball and I think it's the way we need to go," Benton coach Michelle Owens said. "I think it's a great idea. I hope we continue to be successful so it will help us." High school softball coaches from around the state will meet in Alexandria next week to seed teams for the playoffs.

I hope we continue to be successful so it will help us."

Said Byrd coach Richard Lary, "In theory, I think it is a very good deal. (Captain Shreve coach Mark) Lambert and I were talking and there are only six north Louisiana teams in it and the 26 from the south. If everybody makes a good faith seeding, I think it is a good deal. Of course, you always worry about politics and people who think about who to vote for and who not to vote for. On paper, it may be even better than the actual power ratings we're going to do next year."

Both Byrd and Benton figure to be teams that could benefit from the new seeding process. Playoff coaches will meet on Friday at Alexandria Senior High to seed the playoff teams in each class.

Both the Lady Jackets and the Lady Tigers are ranked among the state's top 10 teams in the power ratings formulated by kenramsey.com.

Benton is currently ranked No. 6 in Ken Ramsey's Class 4A power ratings, Owens said. If Benton holds a similar place in the seedings, the Lady Tigers would be at home in the first round with a game against the No. 27 seed.
