In driving through the city and passing many of our schools, I have noticed that the activity around the schools has increased. Teachers are seen emerging from their cars with their arms loaded with “school stuff”. This can only mean one thing. It is time for a new school year to get under way. Bossier Parish teachers will begin school on August 8, 2005. On this day, they will first of all be greeted with their back to school check, then attend school workshops and in-services. At most of our schools new faces will be seen.
Other faces will be missed as they have retired or moved to other locales. We look forward to the new ideas and enthusiasm that each new employee brings to our system. Our first day for students will be August 10 and you will see those yellow buses on all our streets and roads. Please remember to be cautious as you drive through our neighborhoods and school zones. We want to keep our children safe.
However, summer does not mean that our schools are idle. We have completed summer remediation and testing, and hopefully those results will be known prior to August 10. Our test scores continue to be among the highest in the state and above national averages.
Many of our teachers have attended summer workshops and in-services in keeping up with new ideas. Many of them have been attending school themselves working toward higher degrees.
Also during the summer, our maintenance department has been hard at work getting our school facilities ready. We are implementing changes due to the passage of the bond issue in September, 2004. New modular buildings will be in place at Apollo Elementary, Stockwell Elementary, and Benton Elementary. Many of the smaller projects such as air conditioning of gyms and kitchens and paving at several schools will be well under way during 2005-2006. We are hoping for a completion date for the three new schools in time for the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.
Our custodians have been working hard getting the floors shined and in general getting their schools ready for another year of students. Our food service people have been busy sprucing up our kitchens with new paint and some of our cafeterias are getting new equipment.
We are excited in Bossier Parish about the new school year. Bossier Parish is a great place to live and raise our families. Our school enrollment continues to increase. Almost every where in our parish we see new subdivisions being built. We have been blessed with tremendous community support and we are humbled to have the opportunity to teach the students in Bossier Parish. May God richly bless each of you in a special way.
