Selitha Turner, Benton High School Speech, Drama and English teacher, has been awarded the VFW Teacher of the Year Award for both Bossier Parish and for the VFW Region. This prestigious award is given to the high school teacher who does an outstanding job promoting student involvement in the community. Mrs. Turner is the sponsor of the SADD organization (Students Against Destructive Decisions). This group sponsored Red Ribbon Week in the Fall with various activities to promote a “Just say No” attitude to drugs and other bad decisions for the students at BHS. The organization also volunteered to work the Revel Anti-DWI food booth for a week in late September and early October. Another student involvement activity took place at Bossier City Court. The SADD officers attended DWI/Joint Day October 16, 2007, where they witnessed the consequences of Drinking and Driving first hand and had a lunch discussion with a parish judge concerning these issues. In November the group conducted a canned food drive in conjunction with the Bossier Sherriff’s Department, and participated in the Angel Tree project for the Salvation Army in December. The group continues to spread the “Don’t Make Destructive Decisions” message throughout the school year. Mrs. Turner was recognized with the VFW Teacher of the Year Award at the recent Bossier Parish School Board meeting. |
