Debaters Steven Chandler and Chris Cummings competed at the ninth Star Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., last month. The two brought home a total of seven trophies in both team and individual events. Cummings said the competitive nature of debate is what he enjoys most about tournaments. "I've been debating for about seven years," he said. "It's a form of pure academic competition. The amount of work you put into it shows through and it can actually affect you and improve your communication skills."
The duo's history is what makes their team unique. Chandler and Cummings both were taught how to debate by the same coach, Don Belanger, who worked with Chandler at Caddo Magnet and Cummings at Benton High School during their high school years.
"I think the fact that we have experience and were trained by the same coach helps," Cummings said. "We also know each other's style. I can trust what he's going to argue and that's a big part of it." Read more at ShreveportTimes.com... |
