Carol Wade has been selected as Benton High School’s Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008. Mrs. Wade currently teaches Biology I and II, Biology Honors, Chemistry, and Human Anatomy and Physiology at BHS. She also supports the Science department by evaluating and recommending students for the AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program, the SMART (Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship) program, and a new pilot engineering program called LATechStep (Louisiana Tech Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Talent Expansion Program). In addition, Mrs. Wade is sponsor for the Benton Chapter of F.C.A (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). She says that she “especially appreciates the opportunity to work with students who have high moral and personal standards and who want to impact their school community in a positive, Christian manner.”
Carol Wade has a B.S. in Biology Education with Physics and Chemistry minors, and a B. S. in Medical Technology. Her first teaching job was in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, from 1978 – 1980. She has also taught at Our Lady of the Lake Clinical Laboratory Program in Baton Rouge, and at Cedar Creek School in Ruston. She has taught at Benton High School from 1990 through 1993, and 2000 through today. Mrs. Wade will be attending a four-day school this summer on Biotechnology and is looking forward to bringing back more cutting-edge information to her biology classes. She will also attend a two-day workshop that emphasizes reading and science.
Mrs. Wade says, “I love providing students with opportunities, knowledge, and skills that can give them an edge when they get to college. I have written several grants, including a MiniTechnology grant, a QSM (Quality in Math and Science) grant, and, most recently, an Academic Incentive Grant in order to secure equipment for science research. I work closely with Dr. Elaine Cox, a microbiologist at BPCC, to provide further support for labs and student involvement. Our newest research tool will be ordered this summer using money from the Academic Incentive Grant. It is a digital spectrophotometer that will be used in Biology II and AP Chemistry.” BHS is very proud of Carol Wade, Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008. |
