Mitch Downey’s Benton High football teams are on a roll
Tuesday, 09 June 2009
Benton High’s Tigers have won or shared district football championships seven years in a row, including both of their first two years in Class 4A. In 16 years as Benton’s head coach, Mitch Downey has 141 victories and 51 losses, for a winning percentage of .734. His teams have a 61-14 (.813) record in the last six seasons. In two of those seasons (2005, 2007), Downey was selected “Coach of the Year” by the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association. Downey, who also earned the award in 1999, is the only Caddo-Bossier football coach to win the award three times. Lee Hedges is the only other local coach who won it twice (at Woodlawn in 1965 and Capt. Shreve in 1973). Read the full article at BossierPress.com...

Henderson on Louisiana team for Nike Bayou Bowl
Thursday, 28 May 2009
Benton fullback Casey Henderson is the only player from this area scheduled to play in the seventh annual Nike Bayou Bowl at Baytown, TX., June 13. Henderson, a 5-10, 225-pound fullback, is one of four North Louisiana players on the 40-player roster of the Louisiana All-Star team that will play a Texas All-Star team at Stallworth Stadium. He has signed a letter of intent with Arkansas Tech. The others are tackle Jon Al White of Ruston, guard Justin Ellis of Neville and safety Radarius Winston of Bastrop. There are five players from the New Orleans area and three apiece from Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and Destrehan. The Nike Bayou Bowl is a non-profit game which raises monies for youth athletic scholarships and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Nike is the new title sponsor for the game. Kickoff for the June 13 game is set for 8 p.m.

Downey: ‘We have a solid base for the fall’
Friday, 22 May 2009
Byrd’s No. 1 offense scored two touchdowns and Benton’s No. 1 offense scored one as the Class 5A Yellow Jackets and Class 4A Tigers wrapped up spring football practice with a scrimmage at Byrd Wednesday. The No. 2 offensive units scored one touchdown for both teams. Brandon Adams scored for Benton’s No. 1 offensive unit on a three-yard run. Mac Howard, who will be a sophomore next year, had a 45-yard touchdown run for the Tigers’ No. 2 offense. “We had some guys out,” Benton coach Mitch Downey said. “We had some young guys step up. We had a good spring. We have a solid base for the fall.” Downey said Mark Harrington played well at quarterback for Benton’s No. 1 offense. He also praised the play of center Jacob Fredieu and four defensive players: cornerback Jeff Lang, end Tanner Crutsinger, tackle Jacoby Thornton and strong safety Cable Tallent. “I thought we played well,” Downey said in summary.
