Scott Smith, Benton High School principal, and Vickey Thrash and Scott Carroway, Assistant principals, met with all new students this past week to welcome them and to familiarize them with opportunities at Benton High, including curricular and extra-curricular activities and Benton policies and procedures. Many of the students are from South Louisiana schools. They have been welcomed warmly into the Benton High School student body. |

Congratulations to the following 2005 BHS Homecoming Court members: Taylor Agee, Heather Ashton, Brittney Barnard, Carolyn Bernard, Rachel Boogaerts, Rachel Carlson, Melissa Duckworth, Olga Georiga, Nadia Lopez, Erica Palma, Brooke Siem, and Haley White. Kendrick Stewart is the Homecoming King. Brook Siem was announced to be Homecoming Queen at the football game Friday night. |

Benton High School Open House for Parents and Students will be Tuesday, August 23. The Open House will begin at 6 p.m. in the New Gym, with a presentation from Scott Smith, Benton High School principal. Parents will be able to visit their child’s classrooms, meet their teachers, receive current curriculum information, and have their questions answered. Mr. Smith encourages all parents and students to attend. |

A new school year brings many changes to the Benton High School community. The BHS family welcomes 8 new members to the faculty and staff. Joining the social studies department is Coach Darien Dukes and Coach John Fleming. Joining the science department is Coach Kyle Machen and Mona Russell. Dave Milner will join the ROTC department and Christian Flugium, Mary Jones, and Lauri Visosky will join the Special Education department. Everyone at Benton is excited about all the new additions to our staff and look forward to the new school year. |

Thursday, the School Board agreed that the head of Benton High School's social studies department, Scott Carroway, will be the new assistant principal at the school. Carroway, head track coach and assistant football coach, has taught at Benton High for more than 10 years. |

Mrs. Wanda Bennett, Director of 911 Communications, presented Scott Smith, principal at Benton, and the Benton administration and faculty a check for almost $1,000 and a Banner in recognition of Benton High School as a “School of Academic Growth.” This recognition is from the Alliance for Education. The Banner, which states that “Benton High School is a School of Academic Growth, on the Path to Excellence,” will be placed outside the school lobby for all to see. Every Benton faculty member will receive a certificate attesting to their participation in achieving this honor for the school. |

Anna Whittington, Maggie Boggs, and Alexander Parmater
have been selected to represent Benton High School in the Bossier
Youth Leadership Program for 2005-2006.
The Leadership Program is sponsored by the Bossier Chamber of
Commerce. These three Benton Sophomores
were chosen because they have demonstrated leadership qualities in both their
school work and their extra-curricular activities. Congratulations to the
deserving students!

Stewart Thompson was named Teacher of the Year for the 2005-2006 school year at Benton High School. Mr. Thompson was selected for many reasons, one of the most significant being his complete overhaul of the bentonhighschool.com web site, taking it from a static site to an interactive site in just one year. Mr. Thompson (known at Benton as the “Webmaster” by his colleagues), first stabilized the original site, and then added more information and more functionality. |
