Former Benton debater brings home awards |

Two local debaters are giving their best this year as they compete on the LSU team. Debaters Steven Chandler and Chris Cummings competed at the ninth Star Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., last month. The two brought home a total of seven trophies in both team and individual events. Cummings said the competitive nature of debate is what he enjoys most about tournaments. "I've been debating for about seven years," he said. "It's a form of pure academic competition. The amount of work you put into it shows through and it can actually affect you and improve your communication skills." Read more... |

Students earn top dollar for animals at livestock show and sale |
For the last 11 years, Sarah Brakeville has shown livestock at the Louisiana State Fair. This year's Ark-La-Tex Agricultural Council Junior Livestock Show and Sale, however, was her last. The auction started at 9 a.m. Wednesday and allowed 4-H and FFA students to present their stock and receive a premium for their hard work. The students select, feed and groom steers, lambs, broilers, goats or hogs for a year to be judged, graded and sold at the State Fair. "I'm a little sad," she said. "I'm going to be back, though. My little sister still shows, and I'm going to come back to work." Brakeville, who hails from Benton, is now a freshman at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Read more... |
