Tuesday, 06 May 2008 |
Benton High School is set to offer a new program to students next year. STEM — short for science, technology, engineering and math — is an honors curriculum that focuses on those subjects. Twenty incoming freshmen have already applied for the new program and current Benton High students interested in STEM will be grandfathered into the program. The program is set up for students to take various honors courses in the four subjects over their high school career. Carol Wade, chemistry and biology teacher at Benton, said many students were already interested in taking the classes but couldn't find room in their schedules. The STEM program structure will allow students to take those classes. |

Sunday, 20 April 2008 |

Benton High School teacher Marvin Nelson said this is the first year for a high school-level robotics competition, possibly even statewide, held from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Benton High School. Five student teams from Benton, Byrd and Parkway high schools came together to compete in two challenges and a judged design presentation. Nelson said the competition is part of a larger effort by local high schools to prepare students for STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — college degree programs and to help launch Benton High's STEM Scholar Program, which will be offered next school year to interested and qualified applicants.
