Benton High’s Tigers have won or shared district football championships seven years in a row, including both of their first two years in Class 4A. In 16 years as Benton’s head coach, Mitch Downey has 141 victories and 51 losses, for a winning percentage of .734. His teams have a 61-14 (.813) record in the last six seasons. In two of those seasons (2005, 2007), Downey was selected “Coach of the Year” by the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association. Downey, who also earned the award in 1999, is the only Caddo-Bossier football coach to win the award three times. Lee Hedges is the only other local coach who won it twice (at Woodlawn in 1965 and Capt. Shreve in 1973). Read the full article at BossierPress.com... |
